If you are a fashion designer, you are concerned with the creative aspect of shape, style, and fit. You want to enlist the help of a Patternmaker who has the technical expertise down, who is genuinely interested in getting your design and fit correct. You want someone who can take your design from development to the production-ready phase, and get the end product in place whether your manufacturing mass-products or sewing a single item.
Being analytical comes with the territory as a Patternmaker.
As a graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Apparel Design and a focus in pattern development. When making a pattern, you are always starting with a flat piece of paper or fabric and trying to turn them into a well fitted, flattering product to wear or use. Therefore, it’s important to be able to logically evaluate the steps it takes to get from point A to point Z with the least amount of problems once point Z is achieved. Growing up, I was always asking why and how things worked, and pondering if there were ways to change or improve them. So, analyzing has just been an inherent part of who I am. That drive for answers is what makes me ideal in the innovation and attention to details for you as a designer.
Working at places like VF Corporation and Perry Ellis International, I gained experience in the patternmaking processes. Where I took 2D concepts and turned them into 3D products, by altering patterns, resolving pattern questions and issues with factories, evaluating pre-production sample measurements, construction quality, and accuracy. Along with fine tuning the brand fit with live models.
Working in the education arena also provided incite on how to breakdown the pattern drafting process to share its fundamental steps in learning and for others to development their own new products. Plus being behind the scenes with University Oregon’s Masters of Sports Product Development Program, providing students hands-on support and guidance in pattern drafting utilizing Optitex CAD program, developing first patterns, technical specs, fitting prototypes, and working with factories.

Design Program APM uses: Optitex.
I use Optitex, an industry standard computerized patterning CAD program. Optitex has a holistic solution approach, which helps me develop apparel and non-apparel soft-good ideas from sketches, images, measurements, existing soft/hard-goods, paper patterns, or digital blocks much quicker, more accurately. In order to get your patterns back in your hands as soon as possible. I also can digitally sew-up your prototype to get a quick overview of what your actual sewn product would look like before you have to spend time and money on a 3D sewn product to review aesthetics, fit, and/or fabric/color choices.
